Liadh Ní Riada appointed Language Planning Officer for the Múscraí Gaeltacht
Comharchumann Forbartha Mhúscraí are pleased to announce that Liadh Ní Riada has been appointed as the Language Planning Officer for the Múscraí Gaeltacht.
Liadh Ní Riada, a native of Cúil Aodha, in undertaking this role will oversee the implementation of the Language Plan for the Múscraí Gaeltacht in conjunction with organisations and the whole of the Múscraí Gaeltacht community in the years ahead.
Liadh, as a former Member of the European Parliament (MEP), used her role to advocate for the Irish language during her five year tenure in Europe. She was also the coordinator of the European Budget Committee, as well as a member of the Fisheries Committee, the Education and Cultural Committee and a delegate of the Regional Minority Languages group. Prior to being elected as an MEP she worked as an Irish Language Officer at national level. She also worked as an independent film producer and has produced over 30 programme and films for broadcast.
Speaking on her new role Liadh Ní Riada stated, “It is a great opportunity to get involved in a cause dear to my heart – speaking and promoting Irish – in my own area. As an MEP I was very active promoting the language. Not only did I go on a language strike (refusing to speak English and only speaking Irish) but I also succeeded in securing €3.2 million for interpretation and translation services.
I am looking forward to this new chapter in my life. Comharchumann Forbartha Mhúscraí and the Language Planning ‘Meitheal’, with the support of the people in the area, have produced an excellent plan and it is a great opportunity for me to take on the role of representing these views on behalf of my community in every way I can to make this plan work.”
There are 18 Language Planning Officers and Assistant Language Planning Officers working in Gaeltacht areas nationwide implementing language plans in their local areas. Comharchumann Forbartha Mhúscraí was appointed as a Lead Organisation in 2017 and Plean Teanga Mhúscraí (the Múscraí Gaeltacht Language Plan) was approved in 2018. There is an annual budget of €100,000, for a period of seven years, approved to support the implementation of Plean Teanga Mhúscraí.
Liadh Ní Riada continues, “I am looking forward to making contact with the Language Planning Officers in other areas as well, to build and strengthen our links for the good of the language in all the Gaeltacht areas. I am aware that there are challenges but Gaeltacht Mhúscraí is a very special place, with a rich and valuable heritage and tradition, and I am hopeful that the steps laid down in this plan will work towards achieving the aims of the 20 Year Strategy for the language.”
Seán Ó Cuill, Chair of Comharchumann Forbartha Mhúscraí, said, “We are delighted that Liadh Ní Riada has taken on this role and we are very much looking forward to working with her and supporting her fully in this role in working to implement Plean Teanga Mhuscraí. This is a comprehensive language plan and we know that the people living here are behind it and are willing to play their part in making it happen. There will be challenges but there are also opportunities and we hope that we can all grasp these opportunities and work in exciting new ways for the good of the area.”
